Monitoring cetaceans in the waters of Gran Canaria

WaveGlider autonomous surface vehicle from the Canary Island Oceanic Platform (PLOCAN) fleet, fitted with an array of meteorological and oceanographic sensors, is completing a cetacean observation mission this week in the waters of the East and South of Gran Canaria.

The vehicle’s position, the trajectory covered and the scientific information collected is available on the PLOCAN data portal on the following link http://obsplatforms.plocan.eu/vehicle/USV/67/ in real time. Acoustic traces of cetaceans of interest in the area of operation using a passive acoustic monitoring hydrophone system (PAM) are included.

This mission carries out the tasks of several European projects, such as iFADO (Innovation in the Framework of the Atlantic Deep Ocean) funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area, MARCET (Macaronesian Inter-Regional and Multi-Disciplinary Network of Transfer of Knowledge and Technologies to protect, observe and monitor cetaceans and the marine environment and analyse and sustainably harness the associated Tourism activity) funded by the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 programme, and the EUMarineRobots project (Marine Robotics Research Infrastructure Network) funded by the EU-H2020 programme. PLOCAN participates in IFADO, MARCET and EUMarineRobots as a partner.
