PLOCAN organises a webinar which faces the challenge of decarbonising island electric power systems

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands organises a webinar in the framework of the EU Green Week 2021, with the collaboration of the European project FLOTANT, which proposes an innovative, low cost, low weight and safe solution for the decarbonisation of island electrical systems through innovative floating wind power generation optimized for deep water wind sites, where one of its studied sites is placed in the South East coast of Gran Canaria.

Island territories face the decarbonisation challenge at a disadvantage caused by its insularity condition. The Canarian electric power system has been historically highly dependent on fossils fuels because of the absence of other grids interconnections or hydroelectric power within its energy mix. This is especially relevant in electric power systems of minor islands.

The webinar will be held online on June 2nd at 11.00 CET (10.00 Canary time) with the presence of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands. R&D projects which propose innovative offshore solutions will be presented and the transit from R&D to commercial projects will be addressed.

On 28th November of 2018, the European Commission published its strategy related to one of the biggest challenges that actual society is facing: the decarbonisation of the productive, energy and transport systems.
