Marine technical operation services with VIMAS

The access to the glider, ROV and ASV fleet based in the Canary Islands is provided through the VIMAS (Underwater Vehicles, Instruments and Machines) facility. PLOCAN offers service providing a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to use distinctive equipment in both coastal and open sea areas to carry out research, monitoring or testing activities; being able to carry out continuous measurements of various meteorological and oceanographic variables, sampling, ocean testing etc…

Among the main features of the glider these should be pointed out:
  • Perform long range and long duration missions.

  • Average speeds of 25 cm/s.

  • Perform sawtooth vertical profiles through the water column.

  • Emerge at surface at regularly scheduled intervals.

  • Incorporate GPS navigation.

  • Establish two-way communications between the glider and a remote station using satellite phones.

  • Reach maximum depths between 750 m. and 1000 m. depending on the glider model.

  • Measure, at selectable intervals and frequencies, oceanographic variables (conductivity, temperature, pressure, dissolved oxygen, pigments, turbidity and hydrocarbons, etc.)

For the ASVs (autonomous surface vehicles), the main features are:
  • Perform long range and long duration missions based on transects across the ocean surface according to established map of coordinates.

  • Average speeds up to 2 knots.

  • Incorporate GPS navigation.

  • Establish two-way communications between the vehicle and a remote station using satellite phones.

  • Perform measurements on the surface and sub-surface of the ocean at selectable intervals and frequencies of both oceanographic variables (conductivity, temperature, pressure, dissolved oxygen, pigments, turbidity and hydrocarbons, underwater noise, etc.) and meteorological (wind direction and intensity), atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, etc.).

  • Integrate additional component sub-systems (telemetry, sensor, etc.) for measurement, testing and / or validation.

The units of the ROV fleet allow, among others:
  • Carry out surveys including the filming of the area of interest at maximum depths between 100 m. and 950 m., depending on the ROV technology used.

  • Option to manipulate and / or recover small objects and samples, depending on the ROV technology used.

The feature and performance of each unit is limited to the number and type of vehicles available, characteristics of the mission to be carried out and the activity calendar previously scheduled.

There are two types of access:
1.- The most appropriate vehicle is provided for the needs described in the access request, in addition to all the corresponding services, such as the necessary technical personnel.
2.-The user can request technical support to carry out a mission and the necessary vessel for deployment and collection. The vehicle, batteries, telemetry and transport to the PLOCAN facilities will be borne by the user. Support is provided in the maintenance and preliminary testing of user gliders, ROVs and ASVs.

This service is mainly linked to VIMAS facilities and it is subject to a fee.
