The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands -PLOCAN- is an innovative public consortium infrastructure engaged to promote science and technology developments in the marine and maritime sectors through a cost-effective and sustainable multipurpose services combination as observatory, test site, underwater vehicles base, highly specialized training and innovation hub. It is funded by a joint initiative by the Autonomous Government of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Government through the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

PLOCAN is a world flagship initiative to promote and support observation, exploration and innovative management of the oceanic space. Located off East coast of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), it provides an easy, reliable and cost-effective access to great depths at shorts distances from shore.

PLOCAN’s main goal is to make available in an efficient and sustainable way all those necessary facilities and equipment enable to provide a permanent and dedicated support-service for multidisciplinary technological development and multidisciplinary ocean works, while to promote continuous synergistic cooperation scenarios with technology-based companies and institutions.

Since 2008, there is a permanent and specific Summer Programme for Student Exchange between Rutgers University (RU) and PLOCAN. Mainly based on “in-partnership” missions across the Atlantic between both institutions, PLOCAN members in training phase, have the opportunity top spent stays for some month at RU as important step of their learning about glider technologies.
