Members of the German research institutions Fraunhofer and DFKI visited the PLOCAN facilities in order to first-hand know the capabilities and potential that the ICTS offers through its marine test site for technological development and testing in real operational scenarios of marine robotics prototypes. The meeting held between members of the German delegation and PLOCAN staff was a first contact addressed to show capacities and interests from both sides in order to identify synergies through which to establish specific collaboration frameworks.

PLOCAN has commissioned a Wave Glider autonomous vehicle to the south of the island of Gran Canaria, fitted with an array of meteorological and oceanographic sensors aimed at picking up acoustic traces of cetaceans as part of the MARCET project that studies marine mammals in Macaronesia.

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands -PLOCAN- announces the 9th Glider School edition, a reference hands-on and training forum on ocean-gliders technology. It will be organized in the first week of October 2018 in Gran Canaria (Spain). Theres are seats still available. Please apply in http://www.gliderschool.eu/registration/.

Didactical contents will cover both hardware and software issues through theoretical and practical dedicated sessions in class, lab and open waters using real ocean-glider units by different technologies (Waveglider, Sailbuoy, Slocum, Seaglider and Seaexplorer), and focusing on ocean-glider features, capabilities and applications.

This highly specialized training week represents a great opportunity for students and professionals worldwide to learn about the main commercial ocean-glider technologies. After the 2017 edition, 107 students from 23 countries have been trained, representing the 5 continents.

The Glider School counts with the direct teaching-support from leading ocean-glider manufacturers, sensors and rest of modules that integrates these state-of-the-art unmanned autonomous ocean-observing platforms.
