The building of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands that is under construction has been fixed to the seabed at the planned location in the test site of the PLOCAN Consortium, situated to the north-east of the island of Gran Canaria, following successful completion of the mooring procedure by UTE Acciona-Lopesan.
On 30 November the educational boat Canarias-III departed from the south of the island of El Hierro to begin its transatlantic voyage as part of the ATLANTIC Fall Regatta organised by Educational Passages, the international educational programme that is co-ordinated in the Canary Islands by the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN). Pupils from the IES Garoé secondary school worked together with PLOCAN to prepare this new educational boat that will hopefully cross the Atlantic Ocean in the same way as some of its predecessors, such as Canarias II, which is currently sailing through the waters of the Caribbean Sea after more than six months of uninterrupted autonomous navigation.
The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands Consortium has received the second prize at the Annual Event for Regional Policy and European Funds in Spain where it was recognised as one of the best co-financed actions using ERDF funds in Spain due to its incorporation of innovative elements, the appropriateness of its activities to the established objective, its outreach and engagement with local citizens, and its commitment to environmental sustainability.
PLOCAN was chosen by the Government of the Canary Islands to represent the Canary Islands Autonomous Community at the “Annual Event for Regional Policy and European Funds in Spain”, held in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid on 24 – 25 November. At this gathering, autonomous communities and institutional bodies present their best co-financed actions using ERDF funds and discuss new proposals for the use of these funds, as well as raising awareness of their importance.
