A new delegation of students from the Swedish maritime school Marina Läroverket visited the facilities of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), as part of their training course on board of the ship school Älva in Canarian waters. The students, accompanied by their teachers, were informed in detail about the features and capabilities of the Multi-purpose Offshore Platform, the Test Site and the Observatory. Furthermore, they were able to discover the specific characteristics of the gliders.
The Innovation Manager of PLOCAN, Ayoze Castro, presented the capabilities, competencies and strategies of the Research Proyects of the Consortium in order to collaborate with the potentials offered by the new research space satellites (Sentinels) launched by the ESA (European Space Agency) during the ‘Atlantic from space’ Workshop organised by the ESA in Southampton, UK.
The Project Managers of the project DESPESCA (Monitorización en el banco de ensayos de las Especies Descartadas por la Pesca con Enmalle y Nasa en Gran Canaria), led by PLOCAN, organised a technical session in order to present the results of the project to the collaborating entities: the Fishing Co-operative of Melenara, the Fishing Co-operative of San Cristóbal, the Cabildo (Island Government) of Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands.
A group of Secondary Education teachers has attended the “Construction and Control of low cost ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles)” Course at PLOCAN. This training of trainers Project, organised in 5 levels, is part of the ROVSTEAM Project, which proposes the construction of programmable marine robots in several areas for educational purposes, from low cost tools, with free hardware and software. It incorporates elements and technological tools appropriate to the different levels of education through a project-based learning methodology, both using appropriate hardware and software programming platforms, and it also considers a greater integration to the education and scientific-technical vocation of girls and young women.
