UNDIGEN Marine Autonomous System

The UNDIGEN project consortium (MINECO-IPT-2011-1770-920000), led by the technology company Global Wedge, S.L. has developed and is in the final phase of testing the marine functionality of a wave energy converter (WEC) with an innovative electric generation system, which, in turn, is potentially suitable for different types of WECs (vertical and pendular point absorbers and oscillating water column, among others).

Notwithstanding the potential of this innovative power generation solution in a purely energy harvesting application, its use as an autonomous device is also considered, that is, as a platform for the installation of marine environment measuring equipment in order to face an imminent potential commercial development.

From the beginning Wedge’s activity has been focused on wave energy, mainly on the PTO since it is considered the key component of the WEC as it can modify its characteristics and can be configured as a direct conversion system that eliminates intermediate stages and, therefore, provides greater reliability and associated lifetime, as well as a significant reduction of the WEC´s operation and maintenance costs.Noteworthy is the approximation to the wave generation by part since its inception, focusing and prioritizing the PTO to consider the linchpin of global conversion system (WEC), once such a key component can modify the sensor properties, setting up, at the same time, as a system of direct conversion that eliminates intermediate stages and, therefore, provides greater reliability and lifetime associated , in marriage to a significant reduction in the costs of operation and maintenance of the WEC.

As a result, the central objective of the project focuses on using renewable energy for the autonomous power supply of equipment installed in the WEC. This equipment can be of different uses: coastal surveillance devices, communication equipment, research equipment from the marine environment, etc. along with the effective characterisation of the marine environment from a global perspective.
